I have to admit, I love eating out at restaurants. I especially love a good sit down restaurant! A long time ago one of my pastors challenged the congregation to do something really simple when they ate out. I'm going to challenge you to do the same thing. It is really simple, but in my experience, really powerful as well.
When my family goes out to eat, we pray before we dive into the main course. That's not what I'm challenging you to do, I hope you already do that. My pastor challenged us to do something with that prayer. He challenged us to to ask our waiter or waitress if there was something in their life that they would like us to pray for since we were going to be praying anyway. This last week we began picking up this habit again. We went out to eat at Macaroni Grill (not a place we go often). When our waitress Mandi was refilling our waters I began a short conversation that went something like this:
Waiter: What can I get you guys to drink today?
Me: Real quick, we always pray before we eat and we are going to do that today. We also like to pray for our waiteress, is there something specific that you would like us to pray for?
Waiter: Oh, wow, um, yeah, just peace, I could really use some prayer for peace. Thank you so much!
Me: Of course.
She then went off to continue serving other customers and we prayed for Mandi by name. We prayed that God would work in her life and provide the kind of peace she needed. The best part is that later she came back and told us how much that meant to her. She said, "that was so great, it made my day. I actually got chills when you offered to pray for me." It also made our day, we were able to have a very short spiritual conversation and bless someone by praying for them. We didn't have the "Each 1 Reach 1" business cards yet, but if we had we would have left a nice tip and one of the cards. We did leave a nice tip.
Now, here is something important to remember. If you pray for them and represent Christ, then you better tip well too. You don't have to go crazy, but make sure it is a healthy tip. When you leave the tip, leave one of the Each 1 Reach 1 business cards. Now that I have some of the cards, I carry a couple of the cards with me looking for opportunities to touch people with the love of Christ wherever I go.
